- Direct, first-hand visits to the beaches and trails we recommend
- Cross-referencing local sources — Hawaii DLNR, Hawaiian Lifeguard Association, NOAA tides
- Talking to local residents, lifeguards and tour operators
- Updating after each season (and immediately when conditions change)
Gear review process
- We prioritize reef-safe formulations for any product used in or near reef areas
- We disclose limitations and trade-offs in every product card (the “cons” list)
- We never claim a specific price — Amazon prices change too fast for that to be honest
- We update our editor picks at least quarterly
