Reef-Safe Sunscreen on Oahu: What’s Required, What Works

Hawaii has banned chemical sunscreens — here's what to bring instead, and why it matters for reef survival.

Hawaii’s law banning sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate is now in effect. Those chemicals damage coral reefs at very small concentrations. If you are swimming, snorkeling or surfing on Oahu, you need a reef-safe alternative.

What “reef-safe” actually means

The safest formulations use mineral, non-nano zinc oxide as the active ingredient. Non-nano means the particle size is large enough not to enter marine organisms’ cells.

What to look for on the label

  • Active ingredient: non-nano zinc oxide (10%+)
  • No oxybenzone, no octinoxate
  • Water resistant 80 minutes
  • SPF 30+ (SPF 50 for kids and long beach days)

Application tips

  • Apply 15 minutes before entering the water
  • Reapply every 90 minutes and after every swim
  • Cover ears, tops of feet, the back of your neck
  • Use UPF clothing as your first line of defense
