Watching Big-Wave Surfing on Oahu’s North Shore (Safely)
When the winter swell hits Pipeline and Sunset Beach, here's how to watch like a local — without becoming a rescue.
From November through February, the North Shore of Oahu hosts some of the biggest, most dangerous and most beautiful waves on Earth. If you’re not a professional, you’re here to watch — and that is a perfectly legitimate Hawaiian experience.
Where to watch
- Pipeline — the most famous wave in the world. Park early, walk in.
- Sunset Beach — a longer, more open lineup. Easier to see from the shoulder.
- Waimea Bay — only breaks during the biggest swells. When it does, it’s a spectacle.
Safety
- Never turn your back on the ocean
- Stay back from the shore-break — sneaker sets reach far inland
- Do not enter the water unless you are a professional surfer
- Always obey lifeguard signs
